Needless to say we're all hams. :-) I have performed regularly at various venues in the Washington Metro area, which include Twins Jazz. My urban sound is inspired by contemporary artists such as Rachelle Ferrell, Anita Baker and Lalah Hathaway just to name a few. 18, 19 MARK MOSLEY QUARTET FEATURING DAVE SCHNITTER (SAX)

BUY TICKETS ONLINE

Ameen Saleem - Upright Bass
Greg Holloway - Drums
Dave Schitter - Tenor Sax
Mark Mosley - Guitar

Dave Schnitter Jazz Master, Tenor Sax, Composer, Arranger, Educator. “Schnitter's sound is now somewhere between Hank Mobley's warm muskiness and Coltrane's direct, vibratoless approach. He is the jazz world’s forgotten messenger, a marvelous musician who just happened to be in the right place right before the right time.” All About Jazz New York. In 1972 Schnitter formed his own group in New York. Folks who remember Dave Schnitter as a hard-bop tenor player with the Jazz Messengers in the '70s might be a bit surprised by his latest offering. Sketch (Sunnyside), recorded in early 2001, does indeed demonstrate Schnitter's continued ease with that classic approach, but with its lack of a chordal instrument, quirky stop-and-go compositions by Schnitter or trumpeter James Zollar ("Dili Dali," "Sketch," "Sooner or Later," "Flirtation With Faust," "Sputnik"), and sometimes free-jazz improvisational phraseology, it also shows the marked influence of Ornette Coleman's early groups. It's on the standards "For All We Know," "All or Nothing at All" and "You Don't Know What Love Is" where Schnitter is most likely to show his Coltrane and Joe Henderson influences and Zollar to demonstrate his considerable hard-bop skills (he can also do a fine New Orleans gut-bucket imitation). With long-time associate Jimmy Madison on drums and the broadly experienced Thomas Bramerie on bass, the group achieves a high level of cohesion that enables them to interact quite effectively. Sketch is a satisfying combination of the familiar and the unpredictable. David Franklin, JAZZTIMES, December 2004 issue

Mark Mosley is a Baltimore-based jazz and blues guitarist who was inspired to pursue music as a career after performing at the Montreux Jazz Festival while in high school. Since then, Mosley has expanded his experience in a variety of ways - even during his stint with the United States Army, often making an evening gig after having jumped out of a C-130. Since his days with the Army, Mark has toured Spain with Lou Donaldson and worked with Gary Bartz and Keter Betts, among others.

20 CORNELL STONE

24 JAZZ/SOUL ARTIST KENNY WESLEY

How many musical artists today can sing and song write in three languages -- fluently, have four-octave ranges, are expert pianists, and dedicate their lives to serving the world through music? He sings with the tenderness of a Luther Vandross, and in the same breath, with the agility and freedom of a Stevie Wonder. Kenny Wesley is the young new face of contemporary and jazz music.

Originally for Jacksonville, NC, Kenny is part of a rich musical heritage. “My mother and almost all of her side of the family are incredible musicians, so it seemed natural for me to become a musician.” He was barely a toddler when he started singing and by age 9 he had already created his first compositions on piano. His love for music and other cultures has taken him around the world where he has performed before presidents, dignitaries, heads of state and high-profile celebrities. Kenny has shared the stage with several recording artists such as Yolanda Adams, Anthony David and Jean Carne. His songs have been featured on national television: in 2004, his song “Epiphany”, co-written by Timothy Butler, was featured on ABC’s The View. In May of 2008, Kenny released his debut EP, “I’m Sorry” and is currently working on his first full-length studio album.

If you love classic jazz and soul music, you’ve definitely come to the right place!

19,20 MICHAEL THOMAS (TRUMPET)

BUY TICKETS ONLINE

For DC-based trumpeter Michael Thomas this initial release, The Messenger, is the result of a true labor of love. Not one to wait for a record label to come knocking at his door, Thomas seized the initiative himself, not only starting his own label and releasing his own debut disc, but also developing his own home studio to lay down these 10 persuasive tracks. Thomas has a brass proud trumpeter's arrogance in sound but not demeanor. The title is an apt one as the feeling harkens back to Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers without in any way being imitative. And Mr. Do Everything Michael Thomas also wrote all but three of these tunes, mining the books of Sahib Shihab, Tina Brooks, and Mal Waldron for the other three. From Waldron's book he beautifully essays the ever-lovely “Soul Eyes” as a quartet feature for his flugelhorn.

Elsewhere the chores are shared roundly by Thomas' mates the edgy tenor saxman Zack Graddy, bassist Kent Miller, drummer Frank Williams lV, pianist Darius Scott, and he broadens the band on two tracks with the energetic altoist Antonio Parker. -Willard Jenkins , AllAboutJazz.com

3,4 SONNY FORTUNE

BUY TICKETS ONLINE

"Of all of Trane's lasting contributions, perhaps the greatest to the future of improvised music was his example of spiritual integrity and physical drive. Sonny blows with both." - Howard Mandel

When critics speak of Sonny Fortune, names like Coltrane, Cannonball, Young, Bechet, Hawkins and Parker are mentioned. Quite a legacy - but well deserved - for Sonny Fortune embodies all of the finest qualities of those late, great musicians: hard work, dedication to his art, and exceptional music. Lucky for us, Sonny is still here and blowing hard.

Sonny Fortune (born May 19, 1939 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American jazz alto saxophonist and flautist. He also plays soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone and clarinet.

After moving to New York City in 1967 he recorded and appeared live with drummer Elvin Jones's group. [1]. In 1968 he was a member of Mongo Santamaría's band. He subsequently performed with singer Leon Thomas, and with pianist McCoy Tyner (1971-73).

In 1974 he replaced Dave Liebman in Miles Davis's ensemble, remaining until the following year when Miles was forced through illness into a five-year period of inactivity. Fortune was the first alto player to record with Miles since Cannonball Adderley on Kind of Blue in 1959, and he can be heard on the albums Big Fun, Get Up With It, Agartha and Pangaea, the last two recorded live in Japan.

He joined Adderley's brother, Nat, after his brief tenure with Davis, and then went on to form his own group in June 1975, recording two albums for the A&M Horizon label. He has also performed with Roy Brooks, Buddy Rich, George Benson, Rabih Abou Khalil, Roy Ayers, Oliver Nelson, Rashied Ali and Pharoah Sanders, as well as appearing on the live album The Atlantic Family Live in Montreaux (1977).
